Discussion Questions:
  • Do you think the public should give their consent to put genetic drives in the mosquitoes? Why or why not?
  • Which of the three methods, the biotech bugs, bacterium or genetic drives, do you think is the best and safest solution? Why?
  • In what other ways do you think this outbreak problem can be solved, and how much control over it should the government or the public have?

  1. In question 2 you asked about which of the 3 methods seems best, I am curious to know if any of the methods affect us. Do you know if any of these methods harm us more than hurt the mosquitoes?

  2. Regarding the second question, I believe a method such as the bacterium should be used. It will help prevent the spread of the diseases without greatly decreasing the mosquito population. A method that kills off mass amounts of mosquitos, can upset the ecosystem. There are many animals that prey on mosquitos, such as birds and fish, and reducing the number of mosquitos could negatively affect these other species.
