(Period 2) Breaking the Silence: Indonesia Vs. China in the Natuna Islands

http://thediplomat.com/2016/03/breaking-the-silence-indonesia-vs-china-in-the-natuna-islands/

Discussion Questions:

1. What should Indonesia do in response to China's venturing into their territory?

2. Should China be allowed to fish near the Natuna Islands despite it crossing into Indonesia's economic zone?

3. Should the 8 fishermen that were on the Kway Fey be returned back to China? Why or why not?

  1. I believe that the 8 fishermen should be returned back to China because their crime was not very extreme. I think if in the future when there are more clear policies about the Natuna Islands and Indonesia's territory, if fishermen continue to break those policies they can be persecuted. But in this case it is more fair to send the 8 fishermen off with a strong warning.

  3. I agree with Katie's point above, going to fish on foreign waters doesn't seem like that big of a deal. After all it is just fish, but if this continues to happen it could hurt Indonesia's economy. Indonesia should return the 8 fishermen back to China. I feel that keeping the fishermen will just cause more tension between the two countries, and that is never a good thing. Indonesia should return the fishermen on terms that both countries agree on so this doesn't happen in the future.

  4. For number two I think that China's fishermen should be able to fish near the Natuna Islands for recreational purposes. Recreational fishing shouldn't hurt Indonesia economically and should have little impact. But I think it's up to Indonesia if China should be able to fish for business purposes since it is their property.

  5. I agree with Katie as well. I think that the fisherman should just be sent back with a warning, as they have not harmed Indonesia in any way and may have unknowingly made it seem as if they were trying to harm Indonesia's economy. They should just make it clear that they don't want the Chinese fisherman in their territory at all and if it happens again, then it makes sense to take more legal and serious measures. However for this certain situation, I think it is okay to just let them off with a clear warning.

  6. Since the fishers' actions had little impact, they should be returned to China, and China should see this as a warning because they shouldn't fish in Indonesia's territory. Indonesia probably was not worrying about that specific incident, but rather wanted to prevent a similar situation from occurring again in the future.
